Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan urges Merkel to curb Turkey’s policy in region

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a telephone conversation discussing the Nagorno-Karabakh escalation, to curb Turkey’s policy in the region, the Armenian cabinet said in a statement.

“Pashinyan noted that since the beginning of the July events [aggravation of the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border] Turkey has been showing unprecedented activity in the region. He called on the German chancellor to make every effort to curb the aggressive and destructive behaviour of Turkey and prevent its involvement in the region”, the cabinet said.

According to the Armenian cabinet, Merkel expressed deep concern over the current situation, noting the absence of an alternative to a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh issue and the need to return to the peace process within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.
