Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar spoke during their “picnic” at the closed area of Varosha.
During his statement, Erdoğan said that “… for years this place has been in this condition. We are saying let us now take a step, to gain distance. The international viewpoint has never considered the fair share of Northern Cyprus. It is never possible to stomach this injustice done to Northern Cyprus. It is now time to take matters into our own hands. A new process has begun at the closed area of Maraş (Varosha). This place is waiting for the day it will embrace its owners …”.
His own statement, Tatar stated that “… This beautiful area which has been closed, is finally opening. We thought it was a human rights necessity for Maraş (Varosha) to open and for its old owners to return and embrace it via the Immovable Property Commission. We took such a step after receiving the approval of the honorable President. It was a correct step that was befitting of us. The owners of property here can come. We can hand it over to them. This place will open in this way. Our road, is a road of peace and security …”.
