Ersin Tatar gave an interview to the Voice of America during his recent Ankara visit, where he said that “… the Greek Cypriot side does not want to share governance and natural wealth with Turkish Cypriots. It is obvious that they will not accept any solution based on equality …”.
According to news sources from the north of Cyprus, during the interview Tatar said that a two-state solution and the recognition of the administration in the north of Cyprus will be insisted during his negotiations with the Republic of Cyprus. Adding, Tatar said that he will not give up the strategy to act together with Turkey on the issue of natural resources in the eastern Mediterranean, stressing that Turkish Cypriots have a right to have a share from the resources in Cyprus and that the Republic of Cyprus had never accepted Turkish Cypriots as equals in any agreement which means that the world and EU should leave the federal solution approach. “… Turkish Cypriots will be assimilated through the federal partnership claim … as known by everyone, the Greek Cypriot side does not want to share governance and natural wealth with Turkish Cypriots. It is obvious that they will not accept any solution based on equality …”.
Speaking on a possible solution model if a two-state solution is not accepted and recognition, Tatar said that “this requires patience. It may not happen in a few days time … the process is not going in our favor. But this is a national cause. Today’s sacrifices are tomorrow’s hope. Therefore, we swore to have a strong country and a state. There is a need to make sacrifices in order to carry the escrow we took from Dr. Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş onward … we will do the right thing. We will see what will happen in the future. We cannot give up because they don’t recognize us or accept a two state solution. If we give up we will lose …”.
Tatar added that during this process the biggest chance will be the support President Erdoğan and Turkey, that “… it is important for me to act with Turkey and to voice the rightful cause of Turkish Cypriots in the world with its support. I attach great importance to this. This will be done during my term and the Turkish Cypriots will make a progress …”.
Tatar also spoke on the possibility that the administration in the north of Cyprus could become the 82nd province of Turkey and said that “… not true. Our relations with the Turkish government and Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have always been good. It will continue this way because we always need the Turkish government and everyone in the TRNC is well aware of this …”.
Tatar lastly spoke on the opening of Varosha and said that: “… first the areas like the coastline of Maraş (Varosha), public spaces and parks should gradually be demilitarized through a Council of Ministers decision … public spaces will largely be returned to their previous and the rightful owners … Maraş (Varosha) will then be opened completely. Now there is a process of forming a new government in the TRNC following my election as the president. The issue will come to the agenda once the new government is established …”.
